Context Matters

In an opinion piece written for and published on MSNBC we get the following propaganda. The entire piece and accompanying video is full of deliberate and deceitful framing of Donald Trump’s speech at a rally in Ohio. Context only makes Trump’s ‘bloodbath’ comment worse Authoritarians know that to get people to overcome taboos about committing violence.Trump’s campaign and his supporters insist that he was simply talking about an “economic bloodbath” for the automotive industry, which was his topic immediately before and after this interjection. We agree with those who think that he was not just talking about cars. Trump was implicitly threatening the nation with violence. That follows from his words and demeanor in the rest of the speech, his overall positioning as Americans’ savior from existential threats, and the broader context of his attacks on democracy (as analyzed by one of the authors of this piece analyzes in the American Autocracy Threat Tracker). Context IS important. MSNBC open this piece by inserting “We agree with those who think that he was not just talking about cars.” as though that is the logical conclusion anyone listening to Trump would come to – despite the bloodbath comment being not in between comments about the automotive industry but as part of the comments about the automotive industry. Read his comments for yourself. Watch and listen to his speech for yourself. Start questioning the spin and lies and misinformation that is being fed to us by the mainstream press. Here is what he actually said (copied from MSNBC) – “We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and [China is] not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected. Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country; that will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars.” The entire video and story contains error after error about the actual (as recorded on video and in court findings) events that they are claiming to be reporting on.
